Drunken man runs SUV over 4, two die

Two labourers were killed and two others were injured as a speeding SUV car with a drunk driver at the wheel ran over the four as they slept on a footpath near Gandhi Nagar Railway station late on Thursday night.

The driver of the SUV, Bharat Bhushan Meena (35), was identified as son of a BJP leader from Karauli district, Badri Meena. The drunken man was nabbed by passers-by and handed over to the police.

The four were taken to Sawai Man Singh hospital, where two succumbed to injuries. Police came to know about the deaths around 7am on Friday.

The two deceased were identified as Sajid Khan (25) and Jagmohan Jatav (40), both of Bharatpur district. The two injured are Nanuram Bairwa (35), resident of Bundi district and Sitaram Yadav (42) native of Madhya Pradesh.

“The accident took place around 11am after which the PCR when immediatel­y rushed to the spot and nabbed the accused. A case under section 304, 279, 337, 338 of Indian Penal Code and 188 of Motor Vehicle Act has been registered against the accused,” said Narendra Kumar, circle incharge of accident police station, Jaipur East.

“Our breathalys­er test found that alcohol content in blood was 264MG per 100 ML which is more than permissibl­e limit. The permissibl­e limit is 30 MG per 100 ML,” said Narendra Kumar, the circle in-charge of Jaipur East police station, in which area the accident took place. He is also investigat­ing officer of the case.

Meena claimed he is a freelance journalist and that the accident happened due to brake failure. “When I was taking a right turn towards Gandhi Nagar railway station, the brakes failed and as a result I lost the balance and ran onto the pavement.”

Badri Meena told HT,“I was busy in the Gaurav Yatra and I came to know about the incident on early Friday morning. The news has completely spoiled my mood.”

When asked further questions he disconnect­ed the phone.
