-

WASHINGTON:

US President Donald Trump said he would pull out of the World Trade Organization if it doesn’t treat the US better. “If they don’t shape up, I would withdraw from the WTO,” Trump said in an interview. Trump said the agreement establishing the body “was the single worst trade deal ever made.” Trump said last month that the US is at a big disadvantage from being treated “very badly” by the WTO for years and that the body needs to “change their ways.”

India’s economy accelerated to 8.2% in the first (AprilJune) quarter of 2018-19 due to pick in manufacturing activity, helped by a lower base during the same period a year ago. Economic growth had dipped to 5.6% in the June 2017 quarter due to destocking by companies ahead of implementation of Goods and Services Tax from July that year.

The economy grew at 15-quarter high of 8.2% in the April-June quarter of the current fiscal year on a good show by the manufacturing and farm sectors, according to government data released today.

The growth rate cemented India’s position as the fastest growing major economy, clocking a higher expansion rate than China’s 6.7% in the same quarter.

The gross domestic product (GDP) at constant (2011-12) prices in the first quarter of 2018-19 is estimated at Rs 33.74 lakh crore, as against Rs 31.18 lakh crore in Q1 of 2017-18, showing a growth rate of 8.2 per cent, a Central Statistics Office statement said.

According to a statement, the quarterly GVA (Gross Value Added) at constant (2011-2012)
