Two days after Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers of Bengal Police said that Momo invites could be locally generated, police arrested an engineering student allegedly for sending such an invite to a student in the state.

Arindam Patra, a student of electrical engineering in a private college, was nabbed from his house under Ketugram police station in East Burdwan district on Friday. This is the first arrest in the state for sending Momo invites.

“Keeping anonymity, the student had send the message of Momo from a number which he had downloaded from an app from Google play-store. The message was sent to a student who lives in Katwa of East Burdwan district. He lodged a police complaint. A team identified Arindam Patra,” said Bhaskar Mukherjee, superintendent of East Burdwan police.

On Friday, Patra was produced in a district court that granted bail with some conditions. The ‘game’ has the image of a girl with a distorted face and eyes bulging out. According to police complaints, these messages appear on WhatsApp and invite the receiver to play and do certain dangerous tasks, , and threatens the recipient to disclose personal information and even defame him/her if he/she does not comply.
