: Days after the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl in a boarding school in Dehradun came to light, a case of alleged sexual assault of a three-and-ahalf-year-old girl in a schoolbus has emerged in the Kathgodam area of Nainital district.

Amit Shrivastava, city superintendent of police, Haldwani, said the accused driver and conductor of the school bus were arrested on Friday evening, and are being interrogated. Shrivastava said police have registered a case under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against the two.

He said it seems the girl has been allegedly assaulted over several days. Her parents took her to a doctor on September 17 after she complained of pain in her private parts, he said.

“A social worker who came to know about the incident from the doctor who examined the nursery student, lodged a complaint. After that we approached the school authorities and got details of the driver and conductor of the bus used to ferry the girl,” he said.

CHART

85 80 April 2 1 May June 2018 July August 4200 The price of India’s crude oil basket was actually falling in dollar terms between June and August 2018 (latest available data). The crude basket price represents the cost of oil which is processed in Indian refineries. This, however, did not translate into a fall in the price in rupee terms because of the continuous fall in the value of the rupee vis-à-vis the dollar. (Chart 1)

Retail prices of petrol and diesel, which are a function of the rupee price, have been increasing continuously, and were the highest in August-end during the April-August 2018 period. (Chart 2) Textbook economics often describes currency depreciation as leading to an adverse effect on imports and a positive impact on exports. As the statistics given above show, for an oil-import dependent country such as India, this can also mean an increase in the import bill and inflation, even if international oil prices actually go down.
