Earlier, there have been several encounters between sand mafia and police.

On March 26, sand mafia of Chambal river opened fire on police, damaging the police vehicle.

On September 18, hundreds of supporters of sand mafias attacked Kaluari police station and snatched a tractor trolley filled with sand.

Sand smuggling has been very much in the practice even after Supreme Court issued orders to ban mining of sand and gravel from river.
