The Hanumangarh police on Tuesday detained Ramniwas Mehla, the main accused allegedly involved in the murder of city corporator Harveer Saharan outside the SDM office in Rawatsar on Monday.

“Mehla was detained from Taranagar town in Churu. We have also rounded up a few more suspects and are trying to find the motive behind the murder,” said Dinesh MN, inspector general, Bikaner Range.

Saharan’s family members had lodged a FIR in which they had named Mehla as one of the accused. Mehla has several cases registered against him, the police said.

According to sources, Mehla and Saharan had developed enmity after Saharan had forced Mehla to close his shop during Bharat Bandh. They also had a fist-fight in full public view at the time. Saharan, who is the husband of local municipality chairperson Neelam Saharan, has three cases of murder registered against him.

Meanwhile, Khinvasr MLA Hanuman Beniwal, who met state water resources minister Dr Rampratap, said, “We have made three major demands to the government. First, there should be a CBI probe into the murder. We have also demanded security for the family of Saharan and action against the officials of the SDM court and officials of nearby police stations. They should be suspended. We have submitted a memorandum to Dr Rampratap and he has assured us that a CBI probe will be conducted,” Beniwal said.

He said that nearly 10,000 people had gathered in Rawatsar and protested against the government for poor law and order in the state.
