Guv calls for chair on Vajpayee
Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh called for research on former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s personality and works, underlining the need for establishing a chair at the Vardhman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU), Kota.
Singh, who was not present at the university’s 11th convocation ceremony, in a written message stated that the university should engage in research on Vajpayee.
The governor also said that now it is necessary to give distance learning a new shape.
He said that universities should understand their social responsibility and organise events in which the youth get to know about villages and develop empathy for the poor and needy.

Vice-chancellor of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (Lucknow) Dr Vinay Kumar Pathak, who delivered the convocation address, said that around 25% students seeking higher education are doing so through distance learn- ing programmes. Prof Pathak said that distance learning accomplishes the mission of ‘Access for All’ vision. A total of 70 students were awarded the gold medal for 2016-2018. Also, 21,317 students were awarded degrees, including PhDs and diplomas, at the convocation.
