Atletico Madrid finally get into groove with 30 win over Huesca

First-half goals from Antoine Griezmann, Thomas Partey and Koke helped a resurgent Atletico Madrid secure a 3-0 home victory over Huesca in La Liga on Tuesday.

Diego Simeone’s side were comfortabl­e as they recorded a third consecutiv­e win in all competitio­ns, with all three goals coming in an opening 35-minute blitz. After an underwhelm­ing start to the season, Atletico looked back to their best, despite Simeone shuffling his pack for the visit of the Liga debutants.

The coach rested Saul Niguez, Rodrigo and Juanfran ahead of this weekend’s derby against local rivals Real Madrid.

FAN KILLED, INDONESIA SUSPEND LEAGUE

Indonesia has suspended play in its top profession­al football league after supporters of a rival team clubbed a fan to death with iron bars and planks, a football associatio­n spokesman said on Wednesday, plunging the crisis-prone league into another scandal. The decision follows the weekend death of Haringga Sirla, a 23-year-old Persija Jakarta fan, who was beaten by a group of Persib Bandung supporters.

BAYERN HELD BY UNFANCIED AUGSBURG

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich dropped points for the first time this season as Felix Goetze scored a late equaliser for Augsburg at his old club in a 1-1 draw. Bayern were cruising to a home win, which would have left them four points clear, before Goetze nodded home the equaliser four minutes from time.

Having lifted the World Cup in 2014, Philipp Lahm now hopes to bring Euro 2024 finals to Germany on Thursday when UEFA announce the hosts for the European Championsh­ips. After retiring last year, ex-national team captain Lahm, 34, is head of Germany’s bid to host Euro 2024 against rivals Turkey.
