10 months later, police fail to make headway
Ten months after the death of Amity University student (Jaipur campus), Stanly Benny, the police are yet to come up with an answer in the case.
Stanly Benny, a student of MBA final year, vomited and collapsed on the evening of November 16 at the university hostel. He was taken to a private hospital later at night but passed away the next evening.
Initially, an FIR was lodged under Section 174 (unnatural death) of CrPC at the Chandwaji police station, but another FIR was lodged on November 25 under Section 302 (murder) after a complaint from the student’s father.
CR Benny, father of Stanly, alleged that his son was beaten by a dozen students studying law and mass communication on November 14 that led to his son’s death three days later.
“He was hit on his head, which resulted in internal injury and blood loss. He told me about the incident on the evening of November 16 when I was in Shillong,” said CR Benny, a civil engineer from Patiala, Punjab.
Dissatisfied with the progress of investigation by the police, CR Benny wrote a letter to chief minister Vasundhara Raje on December 8, 2017 requesting her to transfer the case from the local

police to the Special Operations Group (SOG). Four days later on December 12, family members of Stanly met Rajasthan home minister Gulab Chand Kataria with the same request. “We had no confidence in the local police as they were trying to suppress the matter. That is why we wanted the case to be transferred to the SOG,” CR Benny said. On January 4, 2018 after the intervention of the government, the investigation was transferred to the SOG.
Suryaveer Singh, investigative officer SOG, said, “A fivemember medical board was constituted in July to examine the various medical reports of the private hospital and forensic laboratory. An inconclusive report was presented a few days back that does not ascertain the cause of death. We have asked them to conclude it as soon as possible.”
The registrar and proctor of the university could not be contacted for comments.
