Sandeep grabs India’s first gold at Asian Para Games

Javelin thrower Sandeep Chaudhary clinched India’s first gold medal at the ongoing Asian Para Games, finishing on top in the men’s F42-44/61-64 category here on Monday. Sandeep claimed the top honours with a best throw of 60.01m, which he managed in his third attempt.

The silver medal went to Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Sampath Hetti, who cleared 59.32m in his best effort, while Iran’s Omidi Ali settled for the bronze with 58.97m.

Chaudhary’s disability falls in the F42-44/61-64 category, which relates to limb deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power or impaired range of movement.

The athletes in this category compete without prosthesis. On Sunday, India won two silver and three bronze medals at the Games.

In the 49kg men’s powerlifti­ng event, Farman Basha claimed the silver and Paramjeet Kumar won the bronze.

Swimmer Devanshi Satijawon then picked up a silver in women’s 100 metre butterfly in S-10 category and Suyash Jadhav clinched the bronze in the men’s 200 metre individual medley

JEEVAN BEATS PAES

Continuing his impressive run, Jeevan Nedunchezh­iyan won his second title in a row, clinching the Monterrey ATP Challenger in Mexico with new partner Marcelo Arevalo. The Chennai southpaw, who won the ATP Chengdu Open last week, and his partner got the better of veteran Leander Paes and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela 6-1 6-4 in the final.

It is Jeevan’s fourth title win this season on the Challenger circuit, having triumphed in Winnetka, Ilkley and Dallas, and fifth overall.

He had ended runner-up at Nottingham, Savannah, Tallahasse­e and Lille with regular partner Austin Krajicek from USA.

PAKI TEAM VISAS

:The Pakistan hockey team has submitted visa applicatio­ns to the Indian Embassy for taking part in the World Cup, to be held in Bhubaneswa­r from November 28 to December 16. According to The Express Tribune, 25 players and five officials submitted their applicatio­ns.

In 2016, the FIH had disallowed the Pakistan team to participat­e in the Junior World Cup over Pakistan Hockey Federation’s (PHF) inability to meet the visa deadlines.
