With positive Zika cases on the rise in the state, the health department has been busy controlling its spread, resulting in no update on other seasonal diseases on its website in the past few days.

The department last updated the number of cases of malaria on October 7, while that of swine flu on October 9. Details on dengue and chikungunya are available on its website only until October 11. There is no data on scrub typhus beyond September 23.

The department updates the website with figures on diseases on a daily basis, and on the following day during holidays.

The officials have also not been taking calls for enquiries related to any disease other than Zika, the count of positive cases of which has risen to 72 in the state until October 15, the highest in the country. Calls made to director (public health) Dr VK Mathur, and additional director (rural health) Dr Ravi Prakash Mathur for enquiries went unanswered.

The first instance of positive detection of Zika virus was reported from Ahmedabad in Gujarat in January and February last year with three samples out of those collected testing positive. One case in July 2017 was reported from Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu where officials were able to contain its outbreak, along with those in Gujarat. In Jaipur, on the other hand, the count has been rising steadily.

Rajasthan also leads the country in number of cases of swine flu with 1,822 positive cases with 182 deaths until October 7, according to the National Centre for Disease Control; in dengue, Rajasthan is ranked sixth with 3,022 cases until September 30, as per the details available on the website of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme.

The health department has the update figure — 1,852 positive cases of swine flu with 186 deaths until October 9, and 3,597 cases of dengue with five deaths until October 11. Rajasthan has reported 227 cases of chikungunya until October 11 this year and 4,123 cases of malaria with 191 ‘killer’ plasmodium falciparum (PF) cases until October 7. There were 832 cases of scrub typhus until September 23 with 21 deaths.

The Bharatpur city assembly constituency is expected to witness a triangular contest among the BJP, Congress and Bharat Vahini Party candidates in the December 7 Rajasthan assembly election.

The constituency has 145,897 voters, including 66,877 female. Jat, Brahmin, Scheduled Caste and Mahajan are dominant communities in the seat.

Unemployment, stray cattle menace, poor condition of roads and parks are some of the issues the opposition parties plan to raise during their campaign.

Present MLA Vijay Bansal of the BJP said he has carried out many development works in the assembly segment in the past 15 years and hopes to retain the seat for the ruling party.

“Bharatpur district became divisional headquarters while a medical college, Maharaja Surajmal Brij University, Lohagarh Stadium, four-lane national highway from Agra to Jaipur were set up during my tenure as MLA,” said the three-time MLA.

He won from the seat on BJP ticket in 2008 and 2013 while in 2003, he won as a Indian National Lok Dal nominee. In 2013, he defeated BSP candidate Dalveer Singh by 22,694 votes.
