Advani first Indian to win Asian Snooker Tour event

Nineteen-time world champion Pankaj Advani on Wednesday sent out a strong message before the World Championsh­ips by winning the second leg of the Asian Snooker Tour in Jinan, China. Advani outclassed China’s Ju Reti 6-1 (48-35, 67-23, 24-69, 63-33, 100-0, 47-19, 94-0) in the final to become the first Indian to win an Asian Snooker Tour event.

The World Billiards and Snooker Championsh­ips is less than a fortnight away and the Advani is the defending champion in both. The 33-year-old will now have to immediatel­y switch to billiards as Myanmar hosts the World Championsh­ips from November 12 to 27.

TITLE FOR SUNDEEP

Sundeep Gulati prevailed over Avinash in the Delhi State Billiards final league match and won the title for the fourth time. Sundeep had earlier won the snooker title too. The final scores were 150-81, 151-125, 105150, 147-150, 152-82. Amit Sharma emerged runner-up. Sundeep and Amit will represent Delhi at the nationals at Indore next year.

RITUPARNA ADVANCES

Rituparna Das was the only Indian to taste success at the $150,000 Macau Open on Wednesday as she advanced to the women’s singles Round 2. She beat Chinese Taipei’s Chiang Ying Li 21-13, 21-7 and will face Chinese fifth seed Han Yue on Thursday. RMV Gurusaidut­t, Shreyansh Jaiswal, Mithun Manjunath (men’s singles), Tarun Kona (men’s doubles) and Sai Uttejitha Rao Chukka (women’s singles) lost their openers.

INDIA TO FACE SA

Hosts India will face South Africa in the opening game of the Deaf ICC World T20, starting November 26. The other five teams taking part in the five-day tournament are Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
