Suryakumar Yadav (83) and Siddhesh Lad (80 batting) added 129 runs for the fourth wicket to help Mumbai score 278 runs for five wickets against Railways on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Group A match at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Thursday.

The two combined when the visitors were in a spot of bother at 98 for three thanks to impressive bowling by Anureet Singh, who took two of the first three wickets. Anureet finished with three for 55, eventually accounting for Suryakumar late in the day.

Electing to bat, Mumbai began well with openers Jay Bista and Akhil Herwadkar adding 48 in 10.1 overs. Bista was the more aggressive. Herwadkar made nine before Anureet had him caught behind by skipper and wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat.

Soon Bista was out off Anureet with the score on 63. He fell for 47 (54 balls).

Ashay Sardesai stuck around for a while before he was removed, bowled by left-arm spinner Avinash Yadav for 19 (44 balls). Lad, who wore a mask due to the rising pollution levels in the Capital, then joined Suryakumar as started the rebuilding process.

PUJARA RETIRED HURT

India Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara had to retire hurt due to sore neck as Saurashtra moved to 282 for three on day one of their match against Chhattisgarh. Pujara came into bat after Harvik Desai and Snell Patel had put on 149 for the first wicket. Pujara hit three fours in his 64-ball knock of 30.

MILIND’S DOUBLE

All eyes are on six Northeast teams who are making their debut along with Uttarakhand and Pondicherry. However, it is clear after the initial phase of the

domestic season that most teams have to rely on imports. And it was evident on the first day of the Ranji tie between Sikkim and Manipur when Milind Kumar, a former Delhi player, made an unbeaten 202 out of the 299/9 that Sikkim scored. The next best score was 45 by former Punjab player Bipul Sharma. For Manipur, it was former Delhi pacer Shelly Shaurya who took four for 39.

BIHAR OUT FOR 60

Once a strong team in Ranji roster, Bihar made a horror return to the tournament, getting shot out for just 60 against Uttarakhand. Deepak Dhopola took six for 13 as only three Bihar players could get into double figures and none beyond 13. In reply, debutants Uttarakhand were 201/7.
