A teacher slashed the throat of a class 9 student of an aided school in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district on Saturday after she reportedly rejected his love proposal, police said.

Hindi teacher, 30-year-old Shankar, went to the girl’s house at Bangarupeta in Kurnool in an inebriated condition and allegedly attacked her with a knife.

Later, he also knifed himself in the throat. Police admitted both in a local government hospital. The 13-year old reportedly suffered cuts in the throat but her condition is out of danger, said the hospital sources.

Shankar targeted the girl when her parents were away. He entered the house and somehow managed to send her younger brother out on some pretext. But as he attacked the girl, she raised an alarm. Hearing her call, neighbours gathered in good strength and rescued her. They also thrashed Shankar and handed him over to police.

Human resource development minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao instructed Kurnool district education officer to remove Shankar from the job.

Shankar, working as a vidya volunteer in Rockwood High School, has been accused of stalking the girl for the last one year. Kurnool deputy superintendent of police Yugandhar Babu said the accused had been pressurising her parents to marry off the girl with him. The parents however declined the proposal, saying she is a minor.
