Swapna Barman gets seven pairs of customised shoes

Asian Games gold medallist Swapna Barman will receive seven pairs of customised shoes, one each for the different events of heptathlon, a sports good company said. Swapna, who became the first Indian to secure gold in heptathlon at the Asian Games held earlier this year, was born with six toes in both her feet. Her plight was highlighte­d after she won gold at the Jakarta Games.

DESISA, KEITANY WIN

Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa used a powerful surge to win his first New York City Marathon in five tries and Kenya’s Mary Keitany claimed a fourth women’s crown with a dominant victory on Sunday. Desisa finally made it to the top of the podium with a strong closing mile to win in an unofficial two hours, five minutes and 59 seconds as he and fellow Ethiopian Shura Kitata (2:06:01) passed defending champion Geoffrey Kamworor, who finished third in 2:06:26.

YUKI RISES TO NO. 107

India’s top tennis payer Yuki Bhambri rose a spot to No. 107 in the latest men’s singles rankings. Prajnesh Gunneswara­n also jumped a spot to be No.141 but Ramkumar Ramanathan dropped a spot to 122.

In doubles, Rohan Bopanna moved up to No.37, a position ahead of the Divij Sharan. Leander Paes also rose two spots to 58.
