- Associated Press sportsdesk@hindustantimes.com

A FIFA ethics committee judge was arrested in Malaysia on suspicion of corruption and resigned on Wednesday as director of an arbitration service. Sundra Rajoo’s lawyer said his client had been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission after returning from FIFA business in Zurich the previous evening.

The lawyer, Cheow Wee, said a court refused a request for a seven-day remand order against Rajoo, and that he was later released unconditionally.

“The judge agreed with our position that he (Rajoo) has diplomatic immunity and privileges,” Cheow said. “He cannot be arrested nor detained, and isn’t subjected to our criminal jurisdiction.”

will consider fasttracking the implementation of video assistant referees (VAR) for the Champions League knockout stages this season, according to the European governing body’s president Aleksander Ceferin. The organisation opted against using VAR this season, despite the technology being used by major European leagues in Spain, Italy and Germany, and the World Cup in Russia.

Speaking at a news conference in Brussels on Tuesday, Ceferin said a referee report next week could allow UEFA’s Executive Committee to revise their stance at a Dec. 2-3 meeting in Dublin.
