Birth of Christ: HC allots 15K sq m for event at Girgaum Chowpatty
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE COURT
The Bombay high court on Tuesday directed the Girgaum Chowpatty high power committee, collector and civic body to allot 15,000 sq m on the beach for the annual Birth of Christ celebrations on December 16. The high court bench issued the order after hearing a petition seeking more space for the event.
Initially, the civic body had granted 4,100 sq m as compared to 25,000 sq m in 2017.
Senior advocates Mihir Desai and Soli Cooper, who represented Prabhu Yeshu Janmotsav and Harmony Foundation, told the court that the event would neither damage the beach, nor would it inconvenience other visitors.
“It is a one-day event, wherein members of Catholic community from Mumbai, Thane and Ulhasnagar will participate,” said Desai.
