Gujjars open fire, pelt stones on cops
JAIPUR: As many as six police personnel were injured after protestors demanding 5% reservation in government jobs and educational institutes for the Gujjar community opened fire, burnt vehicles and pelted stones in Dholpur on Sunday.
Dholpur superintendent of police (SP) Ajay Singh said members of the Gujjar community blocked the Agra-morena highway in the afternoon and then started pelting stones at policemen stationed a few metres away. They then climbed houses on the side of the highway and opened fire from country made pistols.
The angry agitators also torched three police vehicles.
The police, in turn, fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob after about half a dozen police personnel were injured in the violence. “The situation is under control now,” Singh said.
Sunday was the third day of the Gujjar agitation.
