Constable commits suicide in Sikar, SHO among four booked

JAIPUR: A constable posted at women police station in Sikar district allegedly committed suicide at his house on Saturday night.

The 29-year-old constable was allegedly depressed over casteist remarks by his colleagues at the police station.

Four police personnel of the police station including the SHO were booked under the SC/ST Act in the case.

The constable’s brother alleged that the women police station’s staff, including station house officer (SHO) Pooja Poonia, used to taunt him by casteist remarks, as a result of which he was so depressed that he committed suicide.

“As my brother was from lower caste, the staff of women police station used to taunt and torture him through casteist remarks. On September 10, SHO Poonia insulted him in front of enti r e poli c e s t at i on s t af f through her remarks. The r e maini n g s t a f f was a l s o i ndul g e d in i ns ul t i ng my brother. He told this incident to his wife also,” the constable’s brother said.

“On September 14 also, my brother was insulted in front of everyone in the police station, as a r e s ul t of which he got s o depressed that he committed suicide by hanging himself at his rented house. A suicide note has been recovered from his possession in which he has mentioned his entire ordeal,” the brother said.

The constable’s family members are protesting outside the mortuary of government hospital in Sikar demanding arrest of the accused cops.

Additional superinten­dent of police Devendra Sharma said the police came to know about the suicide around 2.30am, following which a team was rushed to the spot.

A case under relevant sections of the SC/ST Act and section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC has been registered against four police personnel of the Sikar women police station, including SHO Poonia and three constables. “We have a booked a case against the entire police staff. Action would be taken against them once the inquiry is completed,” he said.

He said the constable had gone to the SC/ST cell on Saturday, but he didn’t report the matter. However, the investigat­ion is on, he added.

The constable had joined the Rajasthan Police in 2008. He was posted at the women police station in Sikar district on September 10.

When Poonia was contacted for her reaction, she didn’t respond.
