JAIPUR: The Congress government in the state once again discontinued a pension scheme for those detained during the 1975 Emergency under to the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), Defence of India Act and Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC). The opposition BJP termed the move as “sedition”. The government has scrapped Rajasthan Loktantra Senani Samman Nidhi Rules, 2008. This will ease the state exchequer of ₹40 crore annually, said a government release.

Urban development and housing minister Shanti Dhariwal said the state cabinet on Monday decided to discontinue pension of MISA detainees. “We do not consider MISA detainees as freedom fighters nor consider them as sentinel of democracy. Freedom fighters are those who struggled for the country.”

A total of 1,363 freedom fighters, which also include MISA detainees, are given pension in Rajasthan. From 2014-15 till date, the state has spent ₹65.82 crore on the pension, according to a reply in the state assembly.

Former chief minister Vasundhara Raje, at the end of her first term in 2008, introduced pension of ₹6,000 for those detained under the MISA, which was reversed by Gehlot in 2009. After coming in government in 2013, Raje resumed the pension and increased it to ₹20,000.

BJP leader and former education minister Vasudev Devnani, in a series of tweets, said, “The Rajasthan government has banned pension of MISA detainees. This decision is such like celebrating the Emergency. Former prime minister Indira Gandhi had put lakhs of people behind the bar under the MISA during the Emergency. To prove the Emergency right, the Congress has discontinued the pension.”

The announcement “shows that the Congress still has mentality as was there during the Emergency. The people will reply to the Congress government in upcoming elections. The government’s move to discontinue pension is like sedition”, Devnani said.
