BJP stitches up alliances to form govt in Haryana
HUNG ASSEMBLY Role of Dushyant Chautala’s JJP in government formation still unclear as eight legislators pledge support to BJP
NEW DELHI/ CHANDIGARH/ MUMBAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) looks set to form the government in Haryana with support from seven Independents and Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) MLA Gopal Kanda, with incumbent chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar holding discussions with the eight legislators in New Delhi on Friday, sources said.
The Khattar-led BJP, which won 40 assembly seats on Thursday, fell six short of a simple majority in the 90-member House. The Congress won 31 seats, improving their tally from the 2014 assembly polls, while the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) secured 10 seats.
By the end of the meetings at the residence of the party’s working president JP Nadda in the national capital, Khattar picked up seven letters of support for the BJP, propelling them over the majority mark, sources aware of the developments said.
Khattar stayed overnight in Delhi on Thursday after results for the assembly polls were announced to fine tune the party’s strategy, which depends on support from non-bjp MLAS.
Soon after the meeting, JJP president Dushyant Chautala, who aspired to be the kingmaker in Haryana, said he still holds the key to government formation in
Haryana if any party wants to provide a stable government. Chautala, at Friday’s media interaction, said he was still open to support either of the two provided the new government would
deliver his party’s agenda, including 75% reservation in jobs for youth from the state and an increase in government pensions.
