JAIPUR: Chief minister Ashok Gehlot said that the organisations working for the empowerment of women should come forward and cooperate with the state government for the elimination of evils and superstitions such as witchcraft and child marriage.

He said that such misdeeds and superstitions cannot be justified in this era of science and technology. This is a hindrance in the progress of the society. Social organisations can play an important role in creating an environment against these evil practices.

Addressing a programme organised by ‘Ekal Nari Shakti Sangthan,’ he said women are educated and are leading in every sector. PM Indira Gandhi, who led the country for 17-years; conducted nuclear test, liberated Bangladesh from Pakistan – but despite such achievements never did any politics on those issues.

Gehlot said it was Indira Gandhi who ushered in the green revolution and made India a wheat sufficient state. The new generation is not aware that 21-point programme is by her. PM Narendra Modi asks what has happened in 70 years but it was Atal Bihari who used to say she is goddess Durga.

Gehlot said Indira Gandhi brought honour to women across the world, but the PM resist taking her name. He said BJP’S claims of nationalism stands exposed after the Haryana and Maharashtra elections.

Exuding confidence he said, “We will win the civic elections as the public has faith in us. In the assembly by-polls, we have received huge mandate in Mandawa and have not l os t at Khinwsar either, as the lead of about 55000 was reduced to 4500. People have given us full support.”

Gehlot said the state government is taking decisions to ensure that women get their rights. In

government schools, the girls are given self defense training, which will increase their confidence. For speedy probe in cases related to women atrocities, an officer in the rank of deputy superintendent of police has been appointed in every district. The government has increased widow and old age pension.

Women and Child Development minister Mamta Bhupesh said the situation of women has improved because of efforts by the state government.

BJP spokesperson Mukesh Pareek described the Emergency era during Indira Gandhi’s term as Prime Minister when people were jailed as unfortunate.

Modi during recent ‘maan ki baat’ did remember Gandhi. The PM has always appreciated the contribution of leaders to the country, but the Emergency era is something that cannot be forgiven, he said.
