Need to fast-track cases on atrocities on women: Prasad

JODHPUR: Union Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Saturday that there is an urgent need to fast-track cases of women atrocities and restore people’s faith in criminal justice system.

Addressing the gathering at the inaugurati­on of the Rajasthan High Court’s new building in Jodhpur, he urged the CJI that there should be a mechanism to monitor disposal of such cases for which funding would not be an issue.

“We have to restore people’s trust by fast-tracking these cases on a very urgent basis” he said adding that the women of the country are in deep pain and distress and they are crying for justice.

Referring to rape cases, he said that the legal provisions have already provided for strict punishment, but now a mechanism is needed to monitor the disposal of these cases.

Appealing to the judiciary of the country in the presence of Chief Justice of India, he said that the mechanism for monitoring the speedy disposal of cases related to female atrocities needs to be developed.

Describing the fast track court as important , Prasad said that 704 fast track courts are already working for heinous crimes and POSCO cases, while

trial of POSCO and rape cases, the process of setting up 1123 dedicated courts is underway.

Prasad said that out of these 1123, 416 have been approved and 161 have started functionin­g.

He s t r e s s e d t h e n e e d t o attract talent to the subordinat­e judiciary and put forward the idea of All India Judicial Services.

“I would urge the CJI and other senior judge that now there must be a mechanism to monitor the disposal of these cases so that India’s stature as a proud country governed by rule of law must be restored at the earliest,” Prasad said, and assured government funding for it. “The women of the country are under pain and distress. They are crying for justice,” he said.
