Woman found hanging in Bharatpur, kin allege gang rape, murder

BHARATPUR: Family of the woman whose body was found hanging from a tree registered a case of murder and gang-rape against six people, police said on Wednesday, adding that all the named accused are absconding.

Police said the body was found hanging from a tree in the forests of Musepur village on Monday. The body was kept in the mortuary of Kaman Community Health Centre (CHC) because the family didn’t accept the body until Tuesday evening.

The woman’s family registered an FIR against six men — Zahid Mev, Naseem Mev, Tahir Mev from Gadhajan village, Amar Singh, Bannu, Balu Harijan from Musepur village — and four unidentified people.

Additional superintendent of police Mool Singh Rana said the body was handed over to the family after a postmortem on Tuesday night. “The family has registered a case of gang rape and murder. We are investigating it,” he added.

The woman has been identified as 26-year-old Shakeela from Gadhajan village. Her father said she was married to Tarif Mev in Gadhajan village two years ago. “On Sunday night, she went out for answering the call of nature when Tahir, Naseem, and Zahid abducted her at gunpoint and took her 6 km away into the forest area where they gang-raped her and later hung the body from the tree,” he said. The woman’s father also said that she was looted of her jewellery.
