In 48 hrs, cops book 252 people for drink driving

JAIPUR: The Jaipur traffic police took action against 252 people for drink driving during a special campaign on December 13 and 14, said officials.

Deputy Commission­er of Police (DCP) [Traffic] Rahul Prakash said that multiple teams of the traffic police in Jaipur conducted late night operations in the two days.

“As a part of the intense drive, action was taken against 252 vehicle owner, drivers which included 66 four-wheelers, 180 two-wheelers, three auto-rickshaws, one truck and two e-rickshaws,” he said.

The accused vehicle owners have been booked under Section 185 of Motor Vehicles Act and police has also initiated the process of suspending drivers licence for three months. The accused may also f ace j ail f or t hree months.

From last three months, the traffic wing of the city police has taken strict measures against drunk drivers and is doing barricadin­g at different locations amusing drivers.

On October 18 and October 19, 295 vehicle owners/ drivers including those of 75 cars/ jeeps, 208 two-wheelers and 12 other vehicles were booked under the Motor Vehicle Act.

In August, 266 people were fined during the special drive by the Jaipur traffic police.

In the last three months, four people have died while several have got injured.

On November 19, a major accident took place on JLN Marg in which the driver of a car, who was under the influence of alcohol, allegedly tried to run over the car on three police personnel who were doing checking near a barricadin­g.

In the last few months, the traffic police has been making efforts like awareness campaign, driver test, night patrolling, rumble strips, improvemen­t of circles by JDA, speed cameras and strict actions under 185 Motor Vehicle act,” said Prakash.

He added, “But public has to support us hand-in-hand to reduce traffic incidents not only on JLN Marg but in the entire city. They have to follow traffic norms as well as create awareness among their family members too.”

In October , the city traffic police ran a special drive against violations of traffic norms especially by teenagers, school vans and students.

Action was taken against 265 vehicles drivers under Motor Vehicle.

Even, the director general of police (DGP) Bhupendra Singh had issued orders last month directing inspector generals of all the ranges and district superinten­dents of police (SP) to run an intensive road safety campaign.
