10 arrested for Jamia violence, none students

NEWDELHI: Ten people with criminal background have been arrested f or t heir al l e ged involvemen­t in the violence near Jamia Millia Islamia University, police said on Tuesday, adding, that none of them were students.

The accused were arrested on Monday night, they said.

Sources said the accused were identified through videos taken during the anti-citizenshi­p Amendment Act (CAA) protest at JMI on Sunday. Police are interrogat­ing them and also identifyin­g other accused who were involved in instigatin­g the violence, they said.

The university had virtually turned into a battlefiel­d on Sunday as police entered the campus and also used force, following protest against the Citizenshi­p Amendment Act, that led to violence and arson, in which four DTC buses, 100 private vehicles and 10 police bikes were damaged. The situation remained tense in the university premises on Tuesday as protesters, including students and locals, converged outside the varsity holding tricolour and placards to continue their demonstrat­ion against CAA and NRC.

Braving freezing cold, they took out small marches outside the varsity, shouting slogans against the government. This is the second consecutiv­e day of peaceful protests after the demonstrat­ion on Sunday turned violent.

67 people, 31 cops injured in Jamia protest: Police

A total of 67 people, including students, and 31 police personnel were injured on Sunday after demonstrat­ors protesting against the Citizenshi­p Amendment Act t ur ne d t he New Friends Colony area near Jamia Millia Islamia into a battlegrou­nd, the Delhi Police said in a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday.

Police also said they registered two separate cases against unknown people for arson and r i o t i ng a nd t hey have not received any complaint from Jamia students or two journalist­s injured in the arson.

According to the report, a total 14 buses were burnt and damaged and 20 private vehicles were torched and smashed by the violent mob during the protest. It also stated that four twowheeler­s were also torched by the mob. It stated that a total of 67 people were injured and their medico legal reports have been prepared. The report mentions that 31 police personnel were injured when the demonstrat­ors, comprising of students and local miscreants carried out arson and damaged public properties.
