Bikaner man, family booked for instant talaq

BIKANER: A man was booked for allegedly pronouncin­g ‘talaq’ thrice on his wife and recording the video in the presence of her parents and relatives in Bikaner, the second such case reported in district after the passage of a bill in Parliament that criminalis­es such practice.

In a complaint given to Kotegate police station, Shahnaz Bano said that her husband Mohammad Ashiq Rathore gave her triple talaq or instant divorce. The complainan­t alleged that her husband came to her maternal home on January 5 and gave her triple talaq recording the video on his phone, station house officer of Kotegate police station Dharam Poonia said.

The police registered a case under section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act against t he accused and his family members. The woman, who is currently staying in her maternal home after an alleged feud with her in-laws, the police said. Ashiq had married Shahnaz 15 years ago and the behaviour with Shahnaz was not good since they married.

She also alleged that Ashiq’s family members were also harassing her. On January 5, when she was busy in household chores, her husband came and pronounced ‘talaq’ three times and said the marriage was over, recording a video, Bano wrote in her complaint to police.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill prescribin­g up to three years imprisonme­nt for men giving instant triple talaq to their wives.
