India reports 2nd case of coronaviru­s in Kerala

INFECTION Medical student returned from China in Jan; 647 Indians evacuated from Wuhan

NEWDELHI/BEIJING: An Indian medical student from Wuhan -- the central Chinese city at the epicentre of the coronaviru­s outbreak that has killed over 300 and affected over 14,000 -- has tested positive for the infection, in the second such case reported from the country on Sunday.

“Second positive case of Novel Coronaviru­s patient, has been reported in Kerala. The patient has a travel history from China. The patient has tested positive for Novel Coronaviru­s and is in isolation in the hospital. The patient is stable and is being closely monitored,” the Union health ministry said in a statement.

Kerala health minister KK Shailaja said the second patient is presently in Alappuzha.

“The second patient returned from Wuhan on January 24. He is stable. He is also a medical student,” she said at a press conference. The identity of the patient cannot be released as per World Health Organizati­on (WHO) guidelines.

On Saturday, the state government had said that the country’s first coronaviru­s-infected patient, a woman student who returned to Kerala from China last week, was recovering well.

The state government has raised the level of alert after the detection of the second case. It has also readied 100 isolation wards in case of any emergency. From February 3, the government has planned to launch awareness sessions in all schools across the state.
