NEW DELHI: Slamming the claims that the Aam Aadmi Party mostly worked towards the end of its tenure with elections in mind, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said the verdict of the Supreme Court on July 4, 2018, gave his government the real power and a push to speed up the work.

The AAP convenor said his government started taking decisions soon after the verdict, adding that the verdict galvanized the government into more work and announcements.

“Look at our work after July 4, which was the real turning point. We started so much work for the unauthorised colonies, there were so many new projects by December 2 0 1 8 . The work stopped for some time because of the model code of conduct during the Lok Sabha elections (MarchMay, 2019). The Supreme Court order was the real push. We worked with so much speed. The files were not stopped and we were free to take decisions,” Kejriwal said.

He admitted that the initial 2-2.5 years of the government were not as active as the files used to go to the LG for approval.

On July 4, 2018, the apex court ruled that Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor is bound by the “aid and advice” of the Delhi government, bringing powers back to the city government, lack of which had created administrative issues between the two.

On the accusation from the opposition that he made major announcements just months before the elections, the CM said they were elected to work for the

common man and “we did that”.

“We were working till the last day, last minute before the elections were announced.”

Over the issue of the Citizenship Amendment Act, he said the party is against the law. “We voted against it in Parliament. I have been saying this.”

He said AAP wants people to vote for the party on the basis of work. “We want votes for our work on education, health, water and electricity,” he said.

He said that it is for the police and the Home Ministry to see the law and order issue in Delhi. “Let them handle it,” he said.

Kejriwal on Sunday also held a roadshow here at Kirari, ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections slated for February 8.

“From the last seventy years, no work was done. Not only in Kirari but the whole of Delhi. The mess of the last 70 years cannot be undone in five years. It will take time to gets things done,” said Kejriwal during the roadshow.

“We have made bus travel for women free. Are the women in Delhi happy?” the chief minister asked the gathering before saying that “a lot needs to be done in the next five years,” he added.

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president J P Nadda on Sunday accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal of “insulting” the people from the poorvanchal region and wondered if he can do any good to them when he cannot respect them.

In his tweets targeting the AAP leader, Nadda posted a brief video of Kejriwal, who is heard saying that poor people from Bihar come to Delhi by spending ~500 and avail of medical treatment of over ~5 lakh here free of cost.

The BJP has often cited these comments to accuse Kejriwal of insulting migrants but the AAP has asserted that the chief minister was making a point about the quality of medical facilities being offered in the national capital.

Nadda s ai d people f r om poorvanchal have played a big role in the development of Delhi but chief minister Kejriwal does not “realise” it.

“The way you have often insulted brothers and sisters from poorvanchal, is unbecoming of a chief minister,” he said.

2014 and then claimed in 2019 that it will take another five years.

Nadda also held a ‘Jansampark Abhiyan’ in Greater Kailash area ahead of Delhi Assembly elections on February 8.

Nadda greeted people and requested them to vote for BJP.

Earlier, Union minister Prakash Javadekar said that home minister Amit Shah will also participate in the campaign.

“Now only five days are left. Sunday being the holiday, most people stay at their homes. Almost one lakh BJP workers will reach door-to-door and tell people what Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done for the Delhi. We will tell them why a change is necessary,” said Javadekar.

“Nadda and Shah will also participate in the campaign,” he added.

Voting in all 70 Assembly constituencies of Delhi is scheduled to take place on February 8. Counting of votes will take place on February 11.
