2 militants, 1 CRPF jawan killed in brief encounter in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Two unidentifi­ed militants and a CRPF jawan were killed in a brief encounter in Lawaypora, about 12 kms from Srinagar, on Wednesday morning, an official said. One militant was also arrested by the Central Reserve Police Force, the official added.

“It was a CRPF naka [post] on which three militants who were moving on a two wheeler opened fire. In retaliatio­n, two militants were killed ... A militant was also arrested by the forces,” said CRPF spokesman Pankaj Singh.

A senior police officer confirmed the killing of two militants in the encounter and said the search operation is still underway. “The militants are yet to be identified.’’

Due to the encounter the traffic on the Srinagar – Baramulla national highway has been stopped and police and army have been searching the areas adjacent to the national highway to see whether any militant is present in the area, officials added. This is the first encounter in Srinagar district this year.

This is the second encounter in the last one week. On January 31, three terrorists travelling in a truck towards Srinagar were killed in a gunfight with security forces at a toll plaza in Nagrota near Jammu. A policeman was also injured after the terrorists opened fire at the security team when the truck was stopped around 5am for a security check at the Ban toll plaza on JammuSrina­gar highway.

Earlier, on January 16, the Srinagar Police busted a Jaish-eMohammad terror module in the city and averted a major terror a t t a c k t hat t he o ut f i t had planned ahead of Republic Day.
