UDAIPUR: The Udaipur police on Saturday seized a container truck from which illicit liquor worth ₹1 crore was seized. The seized liquor was supposed to be smuggled to Gujarat from Haryana via Rajasthan, officials said.

Udaipur district superintendent of police Kailash Chand Bishnoi said 1216 cartons of foreign brans liquor made in HaryanaPunjab have been seized. “The market price of recovered illicit liquor is around ₹1 crore.”

The container carrying the illegal liquor was seized during a checking held at highway near Dungarpur border. It was found that the container was carrying cartons of illegal liquor hidden under sacks, Bishnoi said.

The arrested driver has been identified as Javed Ahmed, resident of Uttar Pradesh. “From the possession of Ahmed, no receipt of the consignment was recovered but RC has been recovered through which we will try to reach to the owners and be able to break the chain,” he said.

Bishnoi said Ahmad received the truck near a toll plaza in Karnal district of Haryana. He didn’t know who had dropped the truck there and was paid ₹50,000 to leave the truck on Gujarat-rajasthan border.

With neighbouring state Gujarat under prohibition, Udaipur has become a transit point for the transportation of the illegal from the north western states to the dry states like Gujarat, said Bharat Yogi , station house officer of Kherwada police station.

“We are questioning Ahmad to get more details,” SHO said.

“A consignment of illegal liquor worth ₹25 lakh has been seized by Kherwada police few days back on highway to Gujarat, but this was the biggest haul of illegal liquor in recent last years,” Yogi said .
