BHARATPUR: A man alleged on Saturday that his wife gave birth to a baby in an ambulance after doctors of a hospital in Bharatpur refused to admit his wife for delivery.

He alleged that his wife was denied admission because they are Muslims, and was referred to Jaipur. The woman gave birth in an ambulance, only 5km from the hospital, but the baby was stillborn.

Tourism minister Vishvendra Singh said he had spoken to Bharatpur MLA and minister of state for health Dr Subhash Garg for action against the doctor concerned.

“I t was s hameful t hat a woman was refused admission due to her religion. I will talk to health minister to take action against this negligence. Minister Subhash Garg should take action against the doctor,” he said.

The man said his wife was taken to Sikri community health centre on Friday night when she had labour. The CHC doctors referred her to the government hospital for women in the district headquarters.

“When I brought her here around 8am today [Saturday], Dr Moneet Walia, head of department, refused to take my wife in after she learnt that we are Muslims. She referred her to Jaipur,” Khan said.

He said he booked an ambulance but his wife delivered a stillborn baby when they were on their way to Jaipur. “We brought her back to the hospital (in Bharatpur). Doctors allowed my wife to be admitted in the ward after media arrived,” he said.

Dr Rupendra Jha, head of the hospital, said the woman was attended to by doctors but was referred to Jaipur due to her critical condition. “I will set up an inquiry into the alleged negligence,” Dr Jha said.

Bharatpur district collector Nathmal Didel said: “I received information about negligence by doctors. An inquiry will be set up and action will be taken against the accused.”
