Covid-19 cases surge in Udaipur, 80 in two days

JAIPUR/ UDAIPUR: Curfew was imposed in 10 areas of Udaipur after a sudden spike in the number of Covid-19 cases, which touched 103 on Saturday, officials said.

Udaipur has emerged as a new hot spot with over 80 cases reported in the last two days. The district which was progressin­g from the orange to the green zone has now landed in the red zone, health department officials said.

Till May 7, Udaipur had 20 Covid-19 positive cases and of these, 13 had recovered. On May 8, in a sudden spurt, 59 cases were r e por t e d. On May 9 , another 23 cases were reported. A pregnant woman who delivered on Saturday was found to be Covid-19 positive. The entire staff at the Zenana hospital has been quarantine­d and the baby’s sample has also been taken, health officials said.

The cases have spread rapidly in the Kanji ka Hatta locality of Udaipur. On Wednesday, a home guard constable tested positive. After that six members of his family tested positive on Thursday. In the last two days another 65 cases have been reported from the locality. Most of the infected are sanitation workers and the municipal corporatio­n has given two-day leave to all sanitation staff as a precaution­ary measure, officials said.

Udaipur chief medical and health officer (CMHO) Dr Dinesh Kharadi said screening and survey of people is on and infected areas are being sanitised. “Cases came to light after sampling was done in these localities on Thursday evening after a 30-year-old home guard constable living in Kanji ka Hatt a was f o und infected.”
