BHARATPUR: Police seized five mini trucks and rescued 66 cows after an encounter with smugglers in Khoh police station area of Bharatpur district on Saturday morning, said Haider Ali Zaidi, the superintendent of police. Four cow smugglers were arrested in the incident, the SP added.

Zaidi said that on a tip-off that cows could be smuggled to Haryana from Deeg, barricades were put in the Khoh police station area. When the smugglers transporting cows in five vehicles from Deeg via Mewat region reached the barricades, police tried to stop them by laying iron nails on the road. The smugglers, however, drove the punctured vehicles to 5km before when they were again asked to stop. “They (the smugglers) started firing on the cops chasing them. In retaliation, the cops too fired a few rounds,” he said.

“Police shot at the tyres of their vehicles, but they managed to drive another 5km, where Deeg police, after being alerted by the Khoh police, managed to stop them by putting up barricades,” he added.

Zaidi said the police arrested four cow smuggles, while others managed to flee. “Five mini trucks were impounded and 66 cows were rescued from them. The cows were shifted to a shelter,” he added.

The four arrested cow smugglers belong to Jamalgarh of Haryana, the SP said. The police have registered a complaint against them under the Rajasthan Bovine Animals (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act, 1995, he added.

Mewat region, sharing border with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, is infamous for cow smuggling.
