‘In Unlock period, we must focus on defeating virus & boosting economy’

NEWDELHI: The country will have to focus on defeating coronavirus and bolstering the economy as it exits from the lockdown and enters the “unlock” phase, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday underscoring the need to keep guard against the deadly virus.

He also stressed that India has always transformed adversities into stepping stones to success and this year won’t be different.

“During this unlock period, one will have to focus on two points -- defeating coronavirus and strengthening the economy,” Modi said in his monthly Mann ki Baat radio address.

He said as people move out during the unlock period, they have to remain more vigilant compared to the l ockdown period.

“Always remember, if you do not wear a mask, do not observe the two-yard social distancing norms or do not take other precautions, you are putting others at risk besides yourselves, especially the elderly and children at home,” he cautioned.

Referring to the recent decisions taken by his government, Modi said during this unlock phase, “many other things are getting unlocked”, which had shackled the country for decades. PTI

NEW DELHI: As part of its military readiness plan to deter any aggressive move by Chinese forces in eastern Ladakh, India has deployed its air defence weapon systems in the sensitive sector where tensions rose sharply after a brutal brawl in Galwan Valley left 20 Indian troopers dead, people familiar with the developments said on Saturday.

“In this heightened state of readiness, necessary measures have been taken by all services working in an integrated environment to ensure that we are ready for all eventualities,” said one of people cited above.

The air defence weapons in the Indian military arsenal include the indigenous Akash, the Israeli Spyder and Soviet- origin Pechora and OSA-AK systems. Air defence systems can engage targets such as fighter jets, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles. Both India and China have significantly reinforced their deployments with fighter jets, helicopters, tanks, heavy artillery and missiles in the region that has garnered extensive global attention in recent weeks, particularly after the bloodshed along the contested LAC in Galwan Valley.
