JAIPUR: Days after Rajasthan police asked all districts to take action against people organising Mrityu Bhoj (death feast), people from different communities have come forward, appealing their community members to stop this practice.

Five days ago, the Rajasthan police headquarters ( PHQ) wrote a l etter t o all district superintendents of police (SPS) to take legal action against those organising and participating in death feast.

“People from different communities are practising this social evil across state which creates a burden on the poor. It is also taken as a status symbol in village which is completely wrong,” said Anil Maholi, a community leader from Karauli district.

Maholi, along with few other persons of the districts have been circulating t he police order on Mrityu Bhoj across various social media groups in order to spread awareness.

Prem Kanwar, former sarpanch from Kacholliya village of Tonk district said that people waste around lakhs of money on this death feast.

“I have been appealing to the people who have decent finan

cial background that instead of spending money on Mrityu Bhoj, people can contribute the money to a better cause,” said Kanwar.

“Under section 4 of Rajasthan Prevention of Mrityu Bhoj Act, 1960, the Sarpanch and every Panch of a Gram Panchayat established under the Rajasthan Panchayat Act 1953 and every patwari and lambardar is bound to communicate to the nearest magistrate if any Mrityu Bhoj is organsed.

“Those violating the act can be penalised. Hence, all district should ensure the implementation of the act,” said Kishan Sahay, deputy inspector general of police, crime branch in his orders circulated to all the SPS.

Sharma said that according to section 3 of Rajasthan Prevention of Mrityu Bhoj Act, 1960, no person shall hold or give or join or take part in a Mrityu Bhoj in the State.

“Whoever commits a contravention of the provisions of section 3 or instigates, abets or assists the commission of any such contravention shall be punishable with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine may extend to one thousand rupees, or both,” said Sharma.

Human rights activist Rakesh Sharma said that Mrityu Bhoj is an evil social tradition.

The custom entails organizing large feats for relatives, friends and acquaintances from all across, who come to pay condolences at someone’s death.

Irony is that in many parts of the state from highly educated people to illeterates, rich to poor considers Mrityu Bhoj as a symbol of social status.

“It is believed that not following the evil practice in villages may land people into social ostracization.

“It is an expensive tradition as those who have lost someone in family just few days back have to feed huge gathering,” Sharma said.
