JAIPUR: The Rajasthan government will promote the dairy sector to provide employment opportunities to the youth, chief minister Ashok Gehlot said on Friday.

Dairy cooperative societies will be strengthened in districts as agriculture and animal husbandry are the main sources of livelihood in rural areas, Gehlot said after laying the foundation of a milk-processing plant at Bhilwara through a videoconference. The plant to be built with an expenditure of ₹75 crore will be ready by August 2022 and will have a capacity of 5 lakh litre per day.

The chief minister said the state government is encouraging food processing to provide farmers with remunerative prices for their crops and empower them financially. “Now, the farmers do not need land conversion up to 10 hectare for setting up foodprocessing units. There is a lot of scope for the expansion of the dairy sector in the state. It will be our endeavour to make milk production, collection and marketing faster,” he said.

Cooperative minister Udayalal Anjana said there are about 33,000 cooperative societies in Rajasthan, of which about 15,000 are related to the dairy sector.

“Participation of women in the dairy sector has also increased considerably.”

National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) chairman Dilip Rath said, “Remarkable work is being done in the field of dairy development in Rajasthan. It is a welcome decision to give ₹2 per litre subsidy to cattle rearers under the CM Milk Producer Sambal Yojana.”

NDDB executive director Arun Raste said that in the last 10 years, milk collection in Rajasthan has increased by 5.6% annually. “About 18,500 new small and marginal milk producers will get livelihood from the new plant.”

It will be our endeavour to make milk production, collection and marketing faster.
