Trump accepts nomination

made on Wednesday by VicePresident Mike Pence in his acceptance speech.

He insinuated that Biden will be controlled by the progressive wing led by Bernie Sanders and young members of Congress such as Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Ilhan Omar. “If Joe Biden doesn’t have the strength to stand up to wild-eyed Marxists like Bernie Sanders and his fellow radicals, then how is he ever going to stand up for you?”

Trump defended his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, promising that a vaccine will be launched this year and “we will crush the virus”.

He said the US has conducted the highest number of Covid-19 tests, much more than any other country, with India being the second largest. “We developed a wide array of effective treatments, including a powerful antibody treatment known as convalescent plasma,” he added.

Many of those watching Trump’s speech were not wearing masks.

Trump said the US will land the first woman on the moon, as he promised to launch a new age of American ambition in space.

He also said the US “will be the first nation to plant its flag on Mars.” Trump said his administration launched the Space Force, the first new branch of the US military since the Air Force was created almost 75 years ago.

WASHINGTON: Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris launched a two-pronged attack against Donald Trump, saying the president is fuelling unrest over police brutality and racial injustice and has failed to protect Americans.

Trump “refuses t o even acknowledge there is a racial justice problem in America,” Biden said in a statement amid swelling social unrest after a Black man, Jacob Blake, was shot in the back at close range multiple times by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, leading to 3 nights of violence.

Harris also went after Trump for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, saying the president showed “reckless disregard” by failing to take decisive action.

“President Trump got it wrong in the beginning. And then, he got it wrong again, and again,” she said. “Donald Trump has failed at the most basic and important job of a president of the United States. He failed to protect the American people.” AFP
