JAIPUR: A finance company has downed its shutters after duping hundreds of investors, including some policemen, of at least ₹10 crore in Bharatpur district under the pretext of offering heavy returns, police said.

The owners who are absconding duped the depositors by offering an interest of 2% every month on a minimum investment of ₹5 lakh, according to police.

Jitendra Kumar, a depositor who filed a complaint with police, said he invested ₹65 lakh after he was assured of ₹2 lakh as interest every month but the owner of the company escaped.

Jitendra said in the FIR that the operators of the Lakhsya Nidhi Finance Company persuaded him to deposit his father’s retirement money.

“The operators informed me that a good scheme has come in which on depositing ₹65 lakh, I will get ₹2 lakh interest every month. I deposited ₹25 lakh in August and ₹40 lakh in two instalments in September. However, the company did not pay any interest after that,” reads Jitendra Kumar’s FIR.

When pressure was created, Pawan Kumar, one of the managers of the finance company, gave him a cheque of ₹5.20 lakh on December 12. “When I went to encash the cheque, I found there is no money in the bank account. Later, it was learned that the accused had escaped after locking the company and the house,” Jitendra Kumar said. “The operators trapped many people in their net, got a deposits of around ₹10 crore and escaped overnight.”

Police found that Brijendra Singh invested ₹30 lakh, Jeetu Singh ₹65 lakh, Azad Singh ₹40 lakh, Badan Singh ₹10 lakh, Devi Singh ₹10 lakh, Sangeeta ₹9.5 lakh, Balaviri Devi ₹10.5 lakh, Rajwati ₹9.5 lakh, Pinky ₹9 lakh, Ramesh Babu ₹9 lakh, Amar Singh ₹9 lakh, Rajveer Singh ₹8.5 lakh, Manoj ₹7.5 lakh, and Digambar Singh ₹5.5 lakh, among others, all locals of Bharatpur.

“Multiple FIRS were registered two days ago. We are investigating the case and trying to nab the accused,” said inspector Surendra Singh, investigating officer in the case.

A police official said on the condition of anonymity that some people are still reluctant to register FIRS.

They fear that the police would ask them the source of such a huge amount.
