In 2020, disciplinary action taken against 750 cops: DGP
JAIPUR: Disciplinary action was taken against more than 750 policemen and 36 were suspended in 2020, director-general of police (DGP) ML Lather said on Monday.
“A total of 43 decoy operations were conducted in the year 2020, which were related to registration of FIRS, connivance with criminals, opening of liquor shops after 8pm, and performance of traffic police, among others. Sixteen policemen were made to leave the force by giving them compulsory retirement. Also, acting on complaints and negligence, 759 policemen were issued disciplinary charge sheets; 126 of them were imposed major penalties and 36 were suspended,” Lather said while addressing the press at the police headquarters in Jaipur.
The police chief said crimes reduced by 14.21% in 2020 compared to 2019. “The reason behind the decrease in crimes can be attributed to lockdown. And also proactive policing was a factor,” he said, adding that murders increased by 3.62% and attempt to murders by 8.24%, but other heinous crimes like kidnapping and abduction decreased by 22.64%.
Lather said the performance of police is assessed on the basis of charge sheets filed in criminal cases and maintaining law and order.
“In the year 2020, other than Dungarpur violence, no major incidents involving deterioration in law and order took place. The percentage of filing charge sheets increased from 70% to 76% in 2020 as compared to 2019. The pendency rate of investigation was 20%,” DGP said.
KOTA: Kota rural police will start de-addiction camps for its personnel addicted to alcohol to help them improve their performance and prevent deterioration in police image.
“The department believes that alcohol addicts aren’t able to concentrate on their work and it also affects their personal lives, so the drive is aimed at de-addicting them,” said Sharad Chaudhary, superintendent of police (Kota rural).
“Alcohol addiction is a psychological disorder which needs a psychological cure and de-addiction, so we are coordinating with psychology experts, de-addiction experts and NGOS for
In September last year, more than 6,000 people were booked in 20 cases filed over violent protests by candidates of a teacher recruitment exam in Dungarpur and Udaipur districts.
Lather said the crime against women reduced by 16%. Cases of rape came down by 11% and kidnappings by 20%. In 99.65% cases related women, police filed charge sheets.
The police had also launched special drives in 2020 to free children made to work as labourers and trace missing children.
“45 missing children were found, 193 kids were freed from labour works and cases were registered against 71 under the treatment of such policemen,” he said.
He said the department has identified some policemen who will be kept in de-addiction camps that will start in next 2-3 days.
“Penalising such habitual liquor-addict policemen through administrative action necessarily does not ensure their cure; it cannot be a deterrent for such abusers. So the problem of liquor abuse can only be dealt with through psychological and medical cure,” he said.
Psychological counseling of such policemen is also being done.
“If the experiment of Kota rural police pays off, then the police and administration of other districts may also go for it,” Chaudhary said.
Juvenile Justice Act,” said Lather.
The police chief said there was a 4% dip in cases registered under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. “49% of cases were found fake during investigation.”
Talking about proactive policing, Lather said 2152 firearms were seized in 2020 which was 22% more than the seizures in 2019. “18,403 people were held under the Excise Act on the charges of illicit liquor smuggling and 4353 were booked under NDPS Act. Jaipur city police and crime performed well in nabbing drug peddlers. A total of 1625 wanted criminals were also arrested.”
