Actor Vivek Anand Oberoi is not one to care about the length of a role. And that clearly shows in his filmography. While he led the show in his debut film, Company (2002), he played a supporting character in Omkara (2006), a film which completed 15 years of its release on Wednesday.

The actor believes in a quote he had read while he was in film school: ‘There are no small roles, only small actors’. He elaborates, “I’ve never been that actor who asks, ‘Mera kya hai is mein?’ More than perception and how it looks on a poster, I’m more about the content. If I hadn’t played the role of Keshav Upadhyay (his character in Omkara), I would have felt like I missed something.” something. I loved what he had done in Makdee (2002) and Maqbool (2004). He called me one day and said he was planning to make a film on the play Othello,” recounts the actor.

Oberoi says he had his eyes set on Langda Tyagi’s role, which was later played by Saif Ali Khan. “I wanted it, but Vishal bhai said, ‘You’re too young for it’. I said I’ll try and look older. But he needed a more mature face. Until then, I hadn’t done an allout negative role, and Langda was so colourful. Then I found out he had Saif in mind. There’s a lot of fondness and warmth that we share, but in that moment, I was envious,” shares Oberoi, as he takes a trip down memory lane.

A funny incident that he remembers is Khan’s refusal to cut with us to add continuity an bring these multi-faceted visions to the forefront,” say Sunil Sethi, chairman, FDCI
