Rising water brings more bodies to shore; PMC count till date 390

After showing a receding trend for the past two days, water level of Ganga and Yamuna again started increasing on Wednesday. And with Ganga inundating larger areas of its bank both at Phaphamau and Chhatnag, bodies buried on the sandy banks of Ganga are yet again starting to get exposed.

Prayagraj Municipal Corporatio­n (PMC) authoritie­s, led by Neeraj Kumar Singh in-charge of Phaphamau ghat and Madan Gopal Yadav of Chhatnag ghat, have so far cremated close to 390 bodies.

As the bodies are being exposed because of the strong currents of Ganga, PMC officials have stepped up their vigil and are performing the cremation of these bodies, both at Phaphamau and Chhatnag.

Officials share that at Phaphamau ghat, there were days when the PMC team found over 50 bodies in a day and cremated them. receding till 8am on Wednesday, but since noon, the water level in both Ganga and Yamuna started rising again.

Water level of Ganga at Phaphamau, as recorded at 8am on Wednesday, was 80.15 meters which increased to 80.19 by 4pm. Likewise, at Chhatnag, the water level was 79.16mt at 8am which increased to 79.36mt by 4pm.

Similarly, water level of river Yamuna was recorded as 79.65mt (8:00am) at Naini which increased to 79.79mt at 4pm.

The practice of keeping an eye mated after following all the religious traditions. Later, since last one week, authoritie­s have found some partially decomposed bodies on the banks of river Ganga around Chhatnag bank too.

“As and where we find any corpse at the riverbank, we immediatel­y set the pyre and cremate the same with full honour and according to traditions,” said one of the senior officials of PMC, requesting anonymity.
