Heavy rain floods over 1200 villages in 25 districts

Heavy rain in eastern and central UP and terai region (bordering Nepal) has led to further rise in the water level of major rivers flooding 1,243 villages in 25 districts.

Giving this informatio­n, additional chief secretary, informatio­n, Navneet Sehgal said, “The state government is maintainin­g a constant vigil in the flood affected districts as well as on the embankment­s of the rivers that are flowing above the danger level. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath is visiting flood-hit districts to take stock of relief and rescue operations. Earlier, the CM had visited, Etawah, Auraiya, Hamirpur and Jalaun districts. Today, (Thursday) he is visiting the flood-hit areas of Varanasi. On Friday, he will visit Ballia, Ghazipur and Kushinagar districts.”

“The state government is working on a long-term project to check waterloggi­ng in residentia­l areas during the monsoon. The relief commission­er is giving regular feedback to the CM over the flood situation, distributi­on of ration, shifting of people from flood-hit areas to shelter homes and rescue operations with boats in various districts,” Sehgal added.

State relief commission­er Ranvir Prasad said, “The Ganga continued to flow above the danger level at Budaun, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Ghazipur and Ballia districts.

The Yamuna was also flowing above the danger level in Banda and Prayagraj districts. River Sharda in Lakhimpur Kheri and the river Kuwano was flowing above the danger level in Gonda district. The rivers maintained the increasing trend due to the heavy rain in the river basin areas.”

Prasad further said above 25 mm rain was recorded in 15 districts, including Balrampur, Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, Varanasi, Deoria, Barabanki, Kushinagar, Bahraich, Mau, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pratapgarh, Basti, Gonda, Sultanpur and Shravasti, in the last 24 hours. Normal rainfall was recorded in 33 districts, he added.

Maximum 404 villages were flooded in Mirzapur district, followed by 169 in Prayagraj, 114 in Jalaun, 79 in Banda, 76 in Hamirpur, 68 in Ballia, 58 in Varanasi, 55 in Etawah, 38 in Kaushambi, 34 in Bhadohi, 24 in Kanpur Dehat, 23 in Farrukhaba­d, 21 in Chitrakoot, 20 in Agra, 16 in Chandauli and 13 in Ghazipur.
