AMU student booked, suspended for attacking another student

AGRA : The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Monday suspended an undergradu­ate student after a case was lodged against him for allegedly attacking another student with a knife and injuring him during a brawl over occupying a particular seat at Maulana Azad Library of the university on Sunday evening, AMU authoritie­s said.

“The injured student Suhail Haneef, who has passed his class 12 exam this year from AMU school and is preparing for NEET, was rushed to JN Medical College (of the university) by other students. He is stable and out of danger,” said prof Mohd Wasim Ali, proctor, AMU, on Monday. Mohd. Haneef, employed at JNMC, in his complained claimed that his son Suhail Haneef was studying at Maulana Azad Library on Sunday evening. “Meanwhile Mohd Anwar Khan, a student of BSc (industrial engineerin­g) at AMU, entered into a brawl with my son over a seat in the reading hall of library. Anwar intimidate­d my son to come out of library. When Haneef came out, the accused along with some outsiders assaulted my son with a knife allegedly with the intention of causing his death,” alleged Mohd Haneef Khan who works as electricia­ncum-tube well operator at JNMC.

“We have received a complaint from father of injured student and prima facie it appears to be a grave criminal act which is indiscipli­ne and misconduct according to AMU Students Conduct and Discipline Rules, 1985, as such the accused student Mohd Anwar Khan has been placed under suspension with immediate effect,” proctor said.

“This suspension shall be applicable during pendency of enquiry ordered and the university campus and its maintained institutio­ns are placed out of bounds for the suspended student,” said the proctor while informing that an FIR had been lodged at Civil Lines police station, Dodhpur, Aligarh against Mohd Anwar Khan by the father of the injured student.

Parvesh Rana, incharge, Civil Lines police station, said “A search has been launched for those involved in the incident and main accused Anwar is on the run.”
