Rob­bery be­gins at home: Man held for loot­ing own house

MUM­BAI: A 37-year- old from has been ar­rested for steal­ing jewellery and other valu­ables, to­tally worth Rs4.25 lakh from his house in Koparkhairane.

The ac­cused, Man­ish Savla, is a res­i­dent of Kalash Udyan in sec­tor 11 and lived with his mother Hem­lata, wife and grand­mother. He is a cloth trader.

Savla had gone miss­ing from his house on May 5 and his fam­ily filed a miss­ing com­plaint the next day the po­lice said. A few days af­ter that, they com­plained that gold and di­a­mond jewellery, along with a lap­top were miss­ing.

While the po­lice sus­pected that Savla had taken the valu­ables, his fam­ily re­fused to put the blame him.

“Savla came back home late at night on May 25. Fol­low­ing in­for­ma­tion given to us, we ar­rested him,” said Ra­jen­dra Sawant, as­sis­tant po­lice in­spec­tor, Koparkhairane po­lice sta­tion.

Dur­ing the in­ter­ro­ga­tion, Savla re­port­edly con­fessed to steal­ing from his house. The po­lice have re­cov­ered the lap­top and some jewellery from him. He said he had gone away to his na­tive place in In­dore.

Sawant said, “It is not yet clear why he stole from his own house. We are check­ing if he had suf­fered any mone­tary losses or is an addict.”

Savla, who was ear­lier re­manded in po­lice cus­tody till May 30, was re­manded to fur­ther po­lice cus­tody till June 1 on be­ing pre­sented in court on Thurs­day.
