CBD BELAPUR: The city observed Constitution Day on Thursday with a host of programmes conducted by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC).
The NMMC has planned a series of programmes spread over three days to mark the day the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly 66 years ago.
An exhibition of rare photographs on the life of Babasaheb Ambedkar, the father of Indian Constitution, is being held at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, Vashi.
Former minister Ganesh Naik and mayor Sudhakar Sonawane inaugurated the programme on Thursday. MLA Sandeep Naik, deputy mayor Avinash Lad and municipal commissioner Dinesh Waghmare were also present.
“Thanks to the Constitution given to us by Ambedkar, India is the most populous democracy in the world,” said Sonawane. “It is important that there is more awareness on the Constitution amongst the youth.”
“Every citizen needs to know the Constitution’s preamble which speaks of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. These are the core values ingrained in the constitution by Ambedkar,” said Waghmare.
On November 28, a special programme has been organised at Vishnudas Bhave auditorium at 11 am. Economist, litterateur and former member of planning commission Dr Narendra Jadhav will speak on the occasion.
“The lecture by Jadhav will help us understand the value of our Constitution better,” said NMMC social welfare and slum improvement committee chairperson Monica Patil.
At Panvel, Sanvindhan Gaurav Diwas programme was organised at Ambedkar Memorial by the PMC. Apart from MLA Prashant Thakur, Panvel Tehsildar Deepak Akde and councillors, a large number of residents were in attendance.
“There is a need to spread awareness about the importance and significance of our Constitution,” said Thakur.
