Women in the city will soon get cleaner toi­lets. The Navi Mum­bai Mu­nic­i­pal Cor­po­ra­tion (NMMC) is all set to re­ceive 12 new toi­lets for women.

Ef­forts are on to fur­ther im­prove on the third rank­ing that Navi Mum­bai has re­ceived in the coun­try in terms of clean­li­ness.

Af­ter ini­ti­at­ing e-toi­let fa­cil­ity in the city, a pi­o­neer­ing project of spe­cial toi­lets for women is be­ing planned in the city.

“The Reliance Foun­da­tion has con­firmed in a let­ter to NMMC that it will pro­vide 12 of th­ese ‘She’ toi­lets in Navi Mum­bai as part of its CSR ac­tiv­ity,” said stand­ing com­mit­tee chair­per­son Ne­tra Shirke.

“Through this fa­cil­ity, we are tak­ing steps to re­solve the is­sue of toi­lets in pub­lic places for women in the city,” she said. “As in other cities, in Navi Mum­bai too, a large num­ber of women stay away from home for work. They have com­plained about hav­ing to suf­fer owing to lack of pub­lic toi­lets. It is at times em­bar­rass­ing for them to use the com­mon toi­lets which are shared with men.”

Giv­ing de­tails of the ‘ She’ toi­let, Shirke said, “Each toi­let, cost­ing around Rs12 lakh, will have spe­cial fa­cil­i­ties such as san­i­tary nap­kin vend­ing ma­chines and san­i­tary nap­kin in­cin­er­a­tors.”

She said, “They will be placed at spe­cific lo­ca­tions that will be cho­sen af­ter proper sur­vey to en­sure ben­e­fit to max­i­mum num­ber of women.”
