A police constable from Padgha police station, 25 kms from Thane, was killed after a speeding truck hit him on Nashik highway in the wee hours on Thursday.

Fakira Sukdu Tadvi, 45, was on duty and helping solve traffic congestion which had occurred because of an accident.

Tadvi was a driver of the control room van attached to the Sahapur police station.

Around 1.30am, he had gone to the spot where a vegetable-laden tempo had overturned between Sahapur and Bhiwandi taluka of Thane district.

Tadvi was helping the occupants when the accident occurred.

Superintendent of police (Thane rural) Rajesh Pradhan said, “Around 1am, the police control room got a call about traffic congestion on the highway near Sonale village after the tempo overturned.”

Tadvi went to the spot and was helping the victims. He was also trying to divert the vehicles which had lined up after the accident.

“A speeding truck came from behind and ran over him. He was sustained severe injuries and was taken to Fortis Hospital in Kalyan where he was declared dead,” said Pradhan.

Tadvi is survived by his parents, wife and three children.

Tadvi’s body was sent to a government hospital for a post mortem. Later, his family took the body to their hometown Yaval in Jalgaon district for the last rites.

Tadvi used to live in Kalyan east. His daughter Sharifa is doing a diploma in education and elder son Rahul is a HSC student. His younger son Riyaz is in Class 10.

Pradhan met his family members and assured them of help as Tadvi was the sole earning member in his family.

“As per the rule, his elder son can be eligible for a job in the police force after completing his HSC. We have arrested the driver and truck has been seized by the police,” said Pradhan.

Bhiwandi taluka police registered a case of 304-A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
