Almost a month after a truck driver from Sangli was found murdered near Panvel bus stand, the police arrested a suspected drug addict earlier this week.

On November 14, the body of an unidentified person had been found opposite Panvel’s ST bus stand, under the bridge. A team of crime branch unit II team headed by senior inspector Adhikrao Pol had inspected the area. “We found an Aadhaar card on the deceased which identified him as Dilip Ingle, 46, a resident of Sangli. He was a truck driver who had brought goods and had parked his truck near the bus stand,” said Pol.

“We learnt from our informers that two people would loot people near the Panvel bus stand,” he said.

The investigations led the team to two men — Gypsy alias Thapa and Pandit alias Gangaram Jaiswal — who frequented the area. “They were drug addicts and would often target passengers, especially those who were drunk or sleeping,” said Pol.

Earlier this week, the police learnt that Jaiswal would be coming to the bus stand area and laid a trap. He was arrested.

Interrogation revealed that Jaiswal, 30, lived at Panvel railway station and is from Davriya district of Uttar Pradesh.

“Jaiswal said he and Gypsy had assaulted a drunk Ingle and looted him of cash and valuables,” said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Dilip Sawant.

“We are interrogating him to find out who else they have looted. We are also looking out for Gypsy,” said Sawant.
