KALYAN: A gang of eight to 10 men broke into a housing society in Kalyan (West) on Thursday morning and stole gold jewellery worth Rs3 lakh from two flats.

On their way back, the men, referred by the police as the ‘chaddi baniyan gang’, assaulted the security guard who tried to stop them.

The guard sustained severe injuries and has been admitted to a private hospital.

According to the police, the men, all dressed in vests and briefs, entered the Sarvodaya Sagar Society near Patri Pool Bridge at 3.45am. While they managed to steal from two flats in the seventh building, they could not take anything from the third flat.

However, the gang locked the other flats from outside so none of the residents could come out of their rooms.

When the security guard, Inaamuddin Shaikh, 65, tried to stop them, they assaulted him with a stone.

The entire incident was caught by the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed in the society.

The Bazarpeth police station is investigating the case.

“We have registered a case and are investigating the incident. We have seized the 30-minute CCTV footage that captured how the gang entered the building and looted the flats and assaulted the guard,” said senior inspector of Bazarpeth police station Dilip Suryavanshi.

On December 2, 2015, a similar CCTV footage from Sudama Complex in Dombivli revealed a similar gang stealing from some of the flats around 3am.

Suryavanshi said, “We will keep a watch on such groups and try to trace the accused and arrest them. They normally enter houses during early morning hours when residents are asleep. They also carry sharp weapons along with them to attack anyone opposing them.”
